Acne

Acne, medically known as Acne Vulgaris, is a skin disease that involves the oil glands at the base of hair follicles. It commonly occurs during puberty when the sebaceous (oil) glands come to life. The glands are stimulated by male hormones produced by the adrenal glands of both males and females.
Effects range from Cosmetic annoyance to long term scarring. At The Keogh Practice we help to select the treatment option that is right for you. These range from:

  • Skin creams
  • Hormonal
  • Antibiotic treatment
  • Or a combination of the three.

We also identify patients likely to have scarring from their acne with a view to arranging more aggressive treatments .

Eczema

The term eczema is broadly applied to a range of persistent skin conditions. These include dryness and recurring skin rashes that are characterized by one or more of these symptoms: redness, skin edema (swelling), itching and dryness, crusting, flaking, blistering, cracking, oozing, or bleeding.
The good news is over half of children outgrow eczema by the age of 11, and nearly 2/3 by aged 16. Early aggressive treatment is the best strategy for control.

The Main Treatments Are

  • Emollients (moisturising treatments) – used daily for dry skin
  • Topical corticosteroids creams– used to reduce swelling and redness during flare-ups
  • Antibiotics in acute infections

Skin Tags

Skin tags are small flesh-coloured or brown growths that hang off the skin and look a bit like warts.
Skin tags are usually a few millimetres in size, although some can be as big as 5cm. Skin tags are harmless and do not usually result in pain or discomfort.
However, you may want to consider getting them removed if they affect your self-esteem, or if they snag on your jewellery and bleed.
